Origine du nom : Le nom du village vient du pluriel latin muri vetuli, de l’occitan mur « mur d’enceinte », accompagné de l’adjectif vièlh « vieux ».

Dressé sur un pech, le château domine la plaine de l’Orb. Cet imposant poste de guet prospéra au fil des siècles. Sa Complexité architecturale indique qu’il fut remanié, reconstruit et agrandi plusieurs fois depuis le XIe siècle. Les marquis de Murviel siégèrent aux Etats du Languedoc jusqu’à la Révolution.
