Autignac
Originally a Roman castrum, the ancient village on the plain near the church of Notre-Dame de Belloc was completely rebuilt stone by stone in the 14th century on the hill of Auquillat, near the seigniorial castle.
As you wander through the narrow streets of the old village, you'll come across some of the oldest houses and, in some cases, dates carved into the stone that bear witness to this period. In the church of Saint-Martin, the stained-glass windows date back to 1895. Like many communes, AUTIGNAC has its totem animal: the crested lark. Legend has it that peasants scanning the sky as they set off to work in the fields thought they saw 2 large eggs on the hill opposite, from which came crested larks... And so the hill we can admire from AUTIGNAC became known as the Pic de la coquillade. Could this be a common thread that explains the origin of the totem pole? Note that the people of Autignac are nicknamed "los cauquilhats" (the coquillards)...
Origin of the name: seigneury of Altiniaco (1155)
