Abeilhan
A welcoming, sunny Languedoc village, Abeilhan is a typical medieval Mediterranean village.
All that remains of the old centre are a few remnants of a time when it was necessary to surround the village with walls to protect it from brigands and other highwaymen. In two places, for example, you can still see the remains of an archway forming the entrance to the village within the ramparts (one at the corner of the rue Maréchal-Joffre, leading behind the church, and the other at the entrance to the rue Blaise-Pascal leading to the church gate). The name ABEILHAN is said to come from the name of a Latin man, APILIUS, a veteran of the Roman army, who was granted land by generals or consuls to settle in conquered countries after good and loyal service. He is said to have founded a vast farm, which gradually formed the village of ABELINO, then ABELLANO, and finally ABEILHAN (as can be seen in the archives).
