IGP Coteaux de Béziers
Bordered to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, the Coteaux de Béziers extend all the way to the north of the city on the terraces of the Villa Franche, from where you can see the cathedral after passing through the Nine Locks of the Canal du Midi. The city of Béziers has preserved from its rich wine-growing past an astonishing profusion of 19th-century buildings designed by many renowned architects. Further back in time, it has also inherited fine examples of religious architecture from the Romanesque and Gothic periods, with a cathedral that dominates the Orb valley and, with its contemporary treatment, serves as the emblem of the Coteaux de Béziers PGI. The birthplace of Pierre Paul Riquet, Béziers is also home to two of the best-known structures on the Canal du Midi, the canal bridge and the monumental complex known as the Nine Locks. The vineyards lie between the Libron, the river that flows from the foothills of the Cévennes to the Mediterranean, and the Orb. Their wines are enjoyed by aficionados, among others, who gather every summer for the féria, one of the most popular events in the south of France.
