Dry stone
Walking along the many footpaths in the Faugérois region, you can discover some very fine capitelles, known here as "carabelles". Maintained by an association, these shelters and many dry stone walls are built using traditional techniques and know-how. Carabelles, low walls and terraces can all be admired at the Mates Basses site in Faugères. How to get there: D909, linking Béziers to Bédarieux. Access via the Caveau des Crus Faugères, car park on the right, behind the building.
Two sites to discover:
The Domaine des Mates Basses, restored and developed by the Ants of the Pierres sèches en Faugères Association, and the Chemin des Carabelles, also created by the Association and awarded the Initiative Région prize by the Banque Populaire in 2006, are great ways to discover the exceptional heritage of Faugères, between vineyards and garrigues.
Since 28/11/2018, the traditional construction technique of dry stone has been listed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
